How do I get started?

Our next session begins on Wednesday, July 6th.

Our OnRamp program is a course that will teach you the Weightlifting, Gymnastics, and Fundamental movements that our program requires.  We also discuss your goals and inform you on proper nutrition.

New On-Ramp sessions begin the 1st Monday of the month.  Each class meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 7:00 pm for 12 sessions.  You must complete this program in order to be eligible for regular class attendance.  Upon completion of the OnRamp classes, you can then join any group class sessions that fit your schedule.

We offer a variety of Membership options to fit your goals.  All memberships are considered Unlimited, meaning there is no limit on the number of CrossFit classes attended in the month.

Yes, sign up for the OPEN!

Let's talk about why you should do the CrossFit Open in 2016. Most of us are worried about not being able to do a certain weight or movement that might come up. Or maybe you don’t want to have a "judge" or have other people watch you doing the workouts or maybe you really aren't here to compete!  The good news is there is a scaled division that will allow everyone to participate!

The Open is a great opportunity for us to celebrate our amazing BlackFin community. If you haven’t been to a Friday Night Lights event or a Thursday night announcement in the box, you most definitely need to make sure you attend one this year.  We encourage everyone to sport a BFCF shirt at every Friday night event, which helps create a fun team atmosphere. It’s exciting to have your fellow members cheering for you, reminding you to get back on the bar and do one more rep, constantly encouraging you to push yourself beyond your limits.

The Open is also a chance for you to see how much progress you’ve made all year long, or just from when you started, by dedicating yourself to coming into the gym regularly. Over the course of the five weeks through the different workouts, you will be able to see where your strengths lie and your weaknesses will most likely be exposed – and we all have them, don’t worry.  Marc and I have been doing these since 2011, and we have definitely been able to see how far we have come!  Let me also point out, you will be doind the workouts at the box as the WOD anyway, so you may as well join our team and represent!!!

But the Open is not all about competition – its about proving to yourself that you can do it.  Most of you are not looking to go to the Games, but you are always looking for ways to better yourselves. The Open is an opportunity for you to celebrate all your hard work from the past year and cherish your health by going out and doing your best. It’s an opportunity to be a part of one of the biggest worldwide sporting events with your CrossFit family.

Every year the Open rolls around we see someone do something they didn’t think was possible – perhaps its their first muscle-up, setting a new PR, or getting out of that comfort zone to sign up for a "competition" – the list goes on. Most importantly, its about people setting their mind to do something and going out and doing it. Every year people walk away from the CrossFit Open feeling inspired and motivated. So sign up and don’t be the one that regrets not doing the Open in 2016.

Please add  to the comment section here about your experience/s with doing the Open.  If you haven't participated in an Open before, then share your concerns or goals for the 2016 CrossFit Open.

It's February!!!  Already!  Happens every year and every year I can't believe it happened that fast.

Most of you have set a goal for yourself that we, at BlackFin, are going to help you achieve.  However, you have to remember that we only have you for 1 hour of the day, but you are in charge the other 23 hours.

We believe that setting goals, writing them down, and sharing them with others is the key to success.  Here are a few tips to help us all be the best:

*If the most difficult thing for you is just getting to the gym, set a small goal to go 2x a week for the next month.  Put it on your calendar, on your phone with reminders, tell your coworkers and your family.  This also goes for practicing movements - plan your time, get to the box early, leave late, jump rope at home.  Just do it!!

*There will always be a scapegoat.  We have heard them ALL!  Working on your goal may be uncomfortable and downright miserable.  You've seen those posts from that #beforethesunupcrew.  Do you think it's easy for them to get up that early??  No, no it is not.  Excuses are irrelevant, the options are plenty, but don't let them win.  Need help with scheduling time, just ask.

*If eating better is your goal, then I promise you preparation is key.  Take the time to plan out your dinner menu, use a crockpot.  Maybe you don't "have time for breakfast."  Whip up eggs and bacon and then put in the fridge in daily portions to grab and go.  Or get some Kathy's Table.

*Lastly, find a WOD pal.  Every class time has more than 1 person.  Target a new friend and let them help make you accountable.  It does wonders to your workout energy and motivation.

Remember, this is for you.  Don't do this for other people.  By doing it for you, you are giving others your best you for a healthy body that will make you a better, happier person.  And we all benefit from that!!

Preparing for Competition

When it comes to competition time, we get a lot of questions on what you should be doing leading up to the competition and what to do the day before/day of the comp.

Workouts: 4-7 days before the competition you can continue to WOD as usual: RX, scale/modify. 3 days before the competition you need to start allowing your body to actively rest and recover (no 1RM or super heavy lifting). Day 2 should be an active rest day: ride bike, row, swim, super light lifting day, etc...something that you enjoy and keeps you moving. Day 1 should be a mobility, hydrating and recovery day.

Nutrition: Carb-loading is a myth. The best thing you can do is continue to eat more foods that can go bad, spoil, die, etc throughout the week (fruit, veggies, meats, eggs). You don't have to change anything drastically, just make sure you are eating and hydrating (with WATER) enough to support your weekly WODs. This is not the time to "lean out". Ideas for Things to Pack for the Comp: •Protein mixes (Progenex, etc), lots of water, energy bars, fruits/veggies, wraps or sandwiches, hard-boiled eggs, string cheese, crackers. You really can't pack too much food; at a comp it's better to have too much than too little.

Stay hydrated throughout the entire competition. •Bring a towel, lifters, jump rope (anything you'd use in a normal WOD), knee sleeves, tape, extra hair ties and socks, etc in a backpack or gym bag.

During the Comp: •Do NOT skimp on your warm-ups. You know how exhausting our normal warm-ups are and they are that way for a reason. Get on the rower, do your 30-20-30, butt kicks, high-knees, etc. That being said, after your WODs you need to be stretching and cooling down. Don't just go sit down or lay down...stretch and roll out all of your problem areas.

•Most importantly, have fun! Yes, this is a competition and we all want to do our best, however, try not to lose sight of what makes Crossfit so awesome: family and community. Cheer on our other teams and be supportive. Every single team and every single person that shows up to support and cheer is just as important as the other. BlackFin is known for our support...let's keep it that way!
