After 2 months of willpower, CrossFit and eating right I'm finally able to slip this back on my finger! It's been about 8 months since that extremely emotional day when my finger finally reached a point of being too big to wear it without it cutting off my circulation. This ring has been my motivation from the start of my journey at BFCF, so it was a very proud moment for me tonight at dinner when my husband burst into tears after noticing I had reached my first goal, knowing how hard I've been working to get here. It would have been easy to have gotten it sized, but I was tired of always taking the easy way. I've come to really realize that things that come easy don't last and when you want something bad enough you have to work hard for it. This ring is now not only a symbol of my marriage but of my strength as well.

I'm not a big fan of progress pictures even though it always makes me feel good to look back. Owen has made me take one every few months since I started Crossfit and I wanted to share this one with you. This is my progress over the past year (May 2015, July 2015, today). The last couple months on ETP has definitely helped with belly fat! That has always been something that has been hard for me to get rid of and I am really happy with how that has progressed. Obviously my thighs have grown in size but hopefully that's in a good way. How I feel overall is the most important change for me. I have so much more energy and don't drag through the day like I sometimes was before.

6 months after joining BlackFin!  I have gained not only on the scale but also in my confidence.  My decisions to join BlackFin and the CrossFit community is probably the best decision I have made in a while.  You guys are awesome, thanks for always pushing me and showing me and everyone at the box what we are capable of!!!

2016 - 6 week paleo challenge before (right) after (left). I am so glad I committed myself with the uncomfortable to complete this challenge, I would have not been able to finish without the support of my people in the box ! I am very happy and surprised with how my performance in the gym has changed and pleased with the changes I see. Larry LopezI am a 33 year old Hispanic male that was diagnosed with sleep apnea in 2005, and type II diabetes and hypertension during the summer of 2010.  I ended up in the emergency room with what I thought was food poisoning.  Needless to say I was going into a diabetic coma and had to be hospitalized for 4 days.  The doctors said that had I waited another day or two that I may have died.  Upon my release from the hospital I was on medications for diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Although I wasn't proud of being on so many medications, I was just happy to be alive.  At this time I weighed 365lbs and finally began to make some minor dietary changes, but not much in the form of exercise so my weight stayed in the 360s.Although I should have taken exercise more serious since my diagnosis, I didn't until June 2012.  Up until this point my diabetes and other health care issues were well managed as long as I took the medications.  On June 25, 2012 my wife and I welcomed our first child into the world and this changed my life forever.  I quickly realized that I wanted to be alive long enough to be here for my daughter and be able to run with her around the playground, attend school events with her, see her off to college, and eventually walk her down the aisle. At the rate I was going, I would not live long enough to see any of this if I didn't make a serious commitment to changing my lifestyle with respect to diet and exercise. I began by limiting carbs to <30 day and I began walking 2-3 miles at least 3-4 days a week and doing some push-ups and sit-ups in my garage.  I lost a total of 70lbs doing these exercises from June-September 2012.The first time I heard about CrossFit was in August 2012 during a family BBQ in Orlando.  I ran into a childhood friend that I hadn't seen in years and he looked amazing and nothing close to what I remember him looking like. I asked him what he had been doing and he said CrossFit.  This is when I began to research CrossFit and the nearest locations to my home were BlackFin and the CrossFit located near Argyle.  I had made appointments with both to see if liked what I saw and experienced.  Needless to say that I never made it to the Argyle CrossFit because I fell in love with BlackFin.  I must admit, it was a little intimidating as it looked like just about everyone there was already in fabulous shape.  However, everyone from the staff and athletes made me feel welcome and like I was part of the family/team.  Everyone is so motivating and encouraging and this really did it for me, so I decided to commit. I started and completed my first WOD on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 weighing 290lbs. Since then then I have loss 35lbs (down to 255lbs) and the best news so far has been that as of Friday, November 9th I am no longer on insulin.  I am not even considered a diabetic anymore, not even pre-diabetic.  Also, as of Thursday, November 28th I am no longer considered to have high blood pressure and have been taken off of high blood pressure medications. Although I have a ways to go to reach my maximum fitness potential, I feel that BlackFin CrossFit has already given me a new lease on life.  I am no longer tired from just walking to my mailbox or just doing activities of daily living. Without everyones encouragement and motivation during the WODS, I would not have made it this far in such a short period of time.

I had been working out daily at a local gym for a couple years doing "cardio days" and "weights days" that really ended up being "watching Sportscenter on the treadmill while I run/walk for an hour day". I would literally kill two hours of my day in the gym doing low to moderate exercises while my eating habits stayed the same and my weight gradually increased. I guess you could say I was bored. Meanwhile, I kept seeing friends on Facebook back home in North Carolina talk about Crossfit and I would visually see their results when visiting them, so I started researching the local boxes on the First Coast and decided "BlackFin" looked like a solid box. I started On-Ramp in May at 207 lbs which was the heaviest I've ever been in my life. I was wearing size 38 jeans, I couldn't do 1 pull-up and definitely didn't have the courage to climb a rope.   But 5 months later, I'm down to 177lbs, wearing size 33 jeans and can do WODS with pull-ups and rope climbs. Not to mention, I did it through football season, which for me includes countless tailgates and great food!

I didn't know anyone at the box, so the hardest part for me was being the "new guy" but that was instantly remedied by how quickly I was accepted. I told Marc how I actually drove in the parking lot twice with the intent of starting and sat for 5 minutes before driving off in fear. At any rate, I'm thankful that I made it in and I look forward to not only meeting my goals but experiencing that with so many good people.

Just wanted to say how thankful I am for having such an awesome gym! For the first time in my life I can look in the mirror and smile about my body. I have set goals and Reached them, I can do things I never imagined myself to be able to do! I am so happy to be a part of BlackFin! You guys are always so encouraging and friendly! I don't think I could ever be able to find another gym like ours.. It's like another family! Thank you Marc for helping me reach my goals!
